### Why KDP Suspends Accounts Over AI Content, And How to Check Yours Is Compliant

I’ve published quite a few books on amazon, ones that have paid the mortgage for years with very little social media input, others that sit there and to their thing. Lots of them written before AI was a thing.

What I’ve seen is that there are a lot of people, especially those on social media, who are experiencing problems with their amazon publishing account. Mainly that they have been surprised by the suddenness and brutality of the decisions about their account, and therefore their revenue stream.

I don’t want my amazon account taken down. And here is what I’ve learned about AI and amazon KDP. So you can hopefully avoid the wrath of the Amazon Bot.

**TLDR.**
*Be Honest. If you’ve used AI, say so.*

Amazon has content guidelines, that non one reads. These guidelines require us, the users of the KDP service to disclose AI generated content. This is text, images, or translations at the point of publishing, or republishing. If you don’t disclose this, and you get caught… this is when your account gets a content strike. And probably a massive head ache for you trying to sort out.. This leads to account level action, and no one wants this.

### Why This Happens

The KDP system draws a hard line between two categories. This is an important distinction. And it matters more than most people think.

“AI Generated” content is anything where a LLM (Learned Language model or AI) created the actual text image or translation. Even if you heavily edited afterwards. **This is what must be disclosed**. Or the wrath of amazon bots will fall on you, with almost no recourse. You've seen the news where some one has left the GBT prompt in their manuscript? That is the most basic flag.

“AI- Assisted” content is work you created yourself where AI tools helped you edit, refine error check or brainstorm. This does not need to disclose. This is things like Grammarly. I'm pretty conservative in my view of AI usage. And the definition changes constantly. Mainly it down to some arcane metric that I'm not sure about. One that I think links to Social media perception.

When you upload your book the form asks you a direct question about AI content. Answer truthfully. If Amazons AI scanning systems detect a discrepancy later then it automatically escalates your account for review. As it’s a false declaration. This is why TickTok and Instagram authors report sudden account shutdowns. The system acts quickly and without warning. The problem is not using AI its not being truthful about it.

In 2026 there is another part to this. AI-Similarity detection. If your manuscript scores as highly similar to existing published work, either yours or someone else’s regardless of whether you intended plagiarism it can trigger the same automated review.

### How to Check It's OK on Your Account

1\. Go through every title in your catalog. Ask yourself honestly if you used AI to generate the actual prose, cover art or translation. Or did you write/create it and use AI to polish? Big difference. And one that can cost you money.

2\. Double check your declarations. Log into KDP, open each of your titles edit pages. And conform the AI content answer you gave matches reality. Not what you assumed at the time.

3\. If you used AI for a cover or Interior Image. Double check if this was disclosed separately. The two different disclosures are tracked separately.

4\. Re-Declare where you need too. If there was a mistake editing and republishing the title lets you get ahead of the amazon bots.

5\. Keep your own records. Version history, prompts, or notes showing your own authorship. For any title where there is a blurred line. A blur between assisted and generated needs to be argued how you want to be.

If you are in any doubt. Yes, carries no penalty (from the amazon judgment bots) and No is the actual risky action for your account.

### Practical Stuff

We currently live in a world where you/we need receipts. While I don't have a good solution to this. I use Scrivener to write long form, that logs everything. It does snap shots, revision, and backups. Google docs logs every key stroke, so you can prove you’ve written each character. I don’t like how google handles data. But you’ve got to choose your devil. Word, that is the industry standard, if you submit to a publisher, they will probably want your manuscript in docx format. Word has a review function that shows all the work you’ve done.

This is just mechanics. I don’t personally think one should share your work product. IE how you’ve built your document. Your process. I know social media is demanding receipts backed up with unfounded accusations. But… and this is the differential. Keeping receipts to debunk unfounded accusations to a publisher like Amazon is probably a good idea.
